Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT)

Athletes don’t fail because their lungs are “unfit” — they fail when their breathing muscles fatigue and limit oxygen delivery, pacing, and decision‑making. Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) targets this limitation directly.

What Is IMT?

Inspiratory Muscle Training is resistance training for the inspiratory muscles, primarily:

  • Diaphragm
  • External intercostals
  • Accessory breathing muscles

 

Using a calibrated breathing device, athletes inhale against resistance — creating measurable and progressive overload, just like strength training.

Why is it Important for Athletes?

At high intensities:

  • Breathing muscles demand more blood flow
  • This competes with working limb muscles
  • Fatiguing respiratory muscles increase perceived effort and slow athletes earlier

 

Stronger inspiratory muscles = reduced respiratory fatigue = better performance under pressure.
